What do we have to offer? Let me go back to the beginning. In the 70's, 80's, and 90's, the Internet and the opportunities it offers the small businessman did not exist, I was a typical computer nerd. The company I started worked with major corporations like Federal Express and Holiday Inn. We programmed their computers, making the companies more efficient and better able to serve their customers. The work was technical and time consuming. Most small businesses could not afford our services (and certainly not individuals).
In 1999, I helped set up a website development firm, feeling that if we could, for less than $100 a month, offer small businesses many of the services I had been providing Big Business, we could be successful.
The Force of the Internet is powerful, revolutionary, exciting. There is, however, a dark side of the Force. Lack of knowledge and misconceptions lead people to bad decisions. Email can be effective, but Spammers poison the well. Internet Service Companies range from reputable to fly by night. People in the Industry range from "committed" to "should be committed". Few cover all the bases. "It is amazing how fast man can take a good invention and make it bad!...I read somewhere that the guy who invented the wheel used it to run over the guy who said it couldn't be done." - from "Curtis" the Comic Strip.
Things change. The coming of the Internet means that the Little Guy can compete with and be as efficient as the Giant Corporation. In what ways? Everyway. Marketing, Advertising, Communications, Product Tracking - we are truly in the midst of a revolution and what you can accomplish is only limited by your imagination. The Internet has meant that I can now serve any size business. I personally found working with Big Business boring, with small business exciting. So I am happy. Whether you embrace or fear change, things will change.
